Hi

The IT equivalent of swine flu

Have you noticed more spam in your inbox recently?  You're not alone.  Since late April there has been a significant increase in the number of spam emails being sent, as ‘spammers’ become smarter, existing software programs are struggling to identify ‘clean’ emails and those that are spam. Recent reports suggest that as much as 94% of all emails received today are spam . Armed with their latest weapon – the Botnet – spammers can now potentially instruct a company’s internal computer network to generate its own spam mail. This represents a considerable threat to any organisation as it effectively means spam is being sent internally through a company. Because most organisations’ security systems deem internal mail ‘safe’, these emails will automatically bypass their spam filters, and potentially cause major disruption.

It's more important than ever that your organisation has the most up-to-date defences against these spam and malware threats, so call our Sales Team today.

'Botnets' - a serious threat to your business

Just when you thought you’d mastered the common computer virus…

… introducing Botnets - the latest invention by today’s hackers - and they pose a serious threat to every business.

Botnets, more commonly known as robot networks, are basically groups of infected computers all running an installed malicious application (or ‘Malware’).

Need a translation? Imagine all the PCs in your office are infected with the swine-flu equivalent of a computer virus! Nasty – but even worse - this virus allows the Botnet ‘herder’ (translation: hacker) to source any information they want from all of your computers and broadcast it on any website or internet chat room at their will.

Imagine the implications on your business if your commercially sensitive information was broadcast in the public arena!

AND as if the potential for this wasn’t bad enough, to compound matters, in nearly all instances, the user is blissfully unaware that their computers are even infected at all!

The illustration (above right), shows the typical life cycle of spam that originates from a botnet (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_botnet). You can read more about botnets here and about a botnet attack on a US Govt dept here.

Team Talk

Wow! What a busy month it’s been! The launch of the NEW LANtech website has been a great success, and we’ve also welcomed some new team members to the LANtech family.

Graeme Lewis returns to us in a permanent role as Senior Engineer, having worked for us on contract in 1998.  His main responsibilities will be providing another layer of back-up for all our clients to ensure an unparalleled level of service.

The latest member of the LANtech family has to be one of the cutest yet! Huge congratulations to Mark and Zoe Roles as they welcome the first addition to their family, Felecia Denise Roles, born 6.55pm, Thursday, 2nd July 2009.

We’d also like to congratulate Blair Tinetti, nominated by LANtech for this year’s Pride of Workmanship Awards, which recognise individuals for their skills and commitment in their chosen field. Blair’s work ethic and dedication to his clients made him an excellent candidate for this award. Blair was presented with his award by Lower Hutt Mayor, David Ogden.  Read more here.

Paul Macnicol, affectionately known as ‘Little Mac’, has taken a temporary leave of absence to fulfil his obligations back in Vietnam by leading a group of unsuspecting tourists down the length of the country… but he will be returning mid August!

Until next time,
the team at LANtech
