Website of the month

The latest tragedy in Italy should be a timely reminder to us all of the earthquake risk right here in New Zealand. If you haven’t already organised your Emergency Survival Kit and an Emergency Plan (for home and for work), please do it now. Find out more

There’s also a handy little interactive tool that shows you the potential damage caused by different sized earthquakes – plus handy hints to prevent such damage at your place.

And if you’re still sceptical about the earthquake risk in New Zealand, there have been at least 30 earthquakes since 27th March. Check out recent earthquake activity here.

Hi

Now’s the time to take a break, grab a coffee and get LANtech’s inside scoop on the latest developments in IT.

Let’s start with a question. Do you print this newsletter or read it onscreen? A recent study of employees in European SMEs showed that 77% prefer “printed or written materials when preparing to make a key decision at work.” You can read more about what’s driving this preference for print here.

And if, like our European counterparts, you prefer your information printed, then make sure you have the most efficient printer for your needs. That old HP laser printer you purchased over 10 years ago may still be reliable, but did you know, it could actually be costing you – and the environment? Sourcing parts for printers that are out of warranty can be difficult, causing inconvenience and potential loss of production while your printer is out of action. A new model printer will save you time, money and help the environment, with:

- built-in power saving features
- faster print time from being idle, therefore improving your productivity and efficiency
- less toner use, again, that’s a cost saving, plus less empty cartridges for the landfill
- less heat generated, so the air conditioning units in your building don’t have to work so hard – that’s another cost saving
- automatic double-sided printing, which means you can halve your paper use – and costs.

For advice and assistance selecting the best printer for your business, please contact the Sales Team on 04 494 9670, or email sales@lantech.co.nz

Spinning Around

When it comes to hardware, including printers, we have a simple rule of thumb – if it spins, it will eventually fail. Murphy’s Law suggests it will fail when you least expect it, with minimum warning, causing maximum cost and inconvenience to you. And not all hardware items are created equal, with expected lifespan dependent on factors such as how often they are used and the environment they operate in.

So how do you avoid potentially disasterous hardware failure? Click here for some top tips from LANtech’s Chris Drowley.

Jargon Unjumbled - Windows 7

There’s a bit of a buzz around town about Windows 7, Microsoft’s latest operating system. At least half the team at LANtech is already using the beta version – with rave reviews. Our verdict so far, is that it’s bigger, better and faster than any other operating system out there, initial start-up is very quiet and the “behind the scenes” IT side is very efficient. Windows 7 won’t be officially released until the end of this year, but you can find out more here , or contact the Sales Team on 04 494 9670 for the inside scoop.

Team Talk

Hello and welcome to Jason No 5!  Jason Larson is a university student who joins our Support Team part-time until the end of the year, to gain some valuable engineering work experience.

So long, farewell to Conor Keegan who leaves us this week for his big OE. Although we’re sorry to see him go, this will be an amazing adventure for Conor and his partner Odette.  We’ll be keeping a keen eye on his travels online!

We Are Sailing

Well done to the LANtech landlovers who recently braved the stormy (or not) seas for the annual Royal Port Nicholson Business House Yacht Race, to raise funds for the Sailing Academy.

The LANtech crew, with invaluable assistance from our clients, were split into 2 teams. The Baileys crew included Rex, Rachael and Carol (from Grant Thornton); the Bootleggers (and the winning team) had Paul, Chris D, Guus (The Quit Group) and Peter (Spencer Holmes) onboard.

We are reliably informed that this is the first time, a “first time participant” has won the race. Must be the skills of the skipper, surely?

Thanks to all our staff and clients who took part on the day and joined us for a barbecue afterwards. We really appreciate your support. You can see more pics on our website and view the professional photos here

Coming soon... Please, please tell me now

Is there something we should know? We’ve asked for your feedback in the past about LANlines, our monthly newsletter, and really appreciate your comments (and have already made some changes as a result).

Now we’d like to know what you think about the BIG picture – your experience as a LANtech customer. From your initial phone or email enquiry, right through to service delivery and follow-up, how do we rate? Look out for more details coming soon, but in the meantime, please do have a think about what you want to tell us – good or bad, brickbats or bouquets – it’s all relevant and important to us.

Until next time
the team @ LANtech
